El 22 de julio de 2019 se cumplen 75 años del nacimiento del Fondo Monetario Internacional, el organismo más importante en el ámbito de la economía mundial. En 1944, un año antes de que terminara la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Europa, 730 representantes de 45 países aliados se reunieron en Bretton Woods, en los Estados Unidos, donde lograron llegar a un acuerdo unánime, del que salieron el FMI y el Banco Mundial. Este no es un libro sobre el FMI, sino una historia del FMI. No es una obra de defensa de la institución ni tampoco de denuncia. Es un relato de las razones de su creación y de los principales acontecimientos financieros en los que ha intervenido. Indaga lo que ha hecho, cómo lo ha hecho, de qué modo se ha enfrentado a las crisis monetarias y financieras, y qué consecuencias han tenido sus acciones. El FMI es una atalaya privilegiada desde donde contemplar la economía mundial de los últimos 75 años, en los que ha sabido adaptarse a los cambios y ha mostrado un notable grado de flexibilidad. Prueba de ello son no solo su propia existencia, sino cómo el número de miembros adheridos alcanzó los 189 en el año 2017.
