Los institutos científicos y literarios de México fueron instituciones educativas precursoras de la que llegría a ser llamada educación superior, que surgieron en algunos estados del México independiente durante la primera república federal y a lo largo de todo el siglo XIX. Sus promotores trataron de que fueran establecimientos innovadores, secularizados, que introdujeran saberes científicos y que dejaran atrás ideas y prácticas de universidades y colegios coloniales. Sus logros fueron muchos, entre ellos, haber sido el germen de las universidades estatales. Su importancia en ese sentido está fuera de duda. Por ello, este libro es un intento por ofrecer a los lectores interesados un conjunto de estudios sobre seis de estos establecimientos, con base en diferentes aspectos (fundación, programas de estudio, estudiantes, profesores, financiamiento), que les permitan acercarse a su conocimiento y comprender su valor en el desarrollo de la educación mexicana.
