Sinopsis
De entre las obras dramáticas del jesuita Juan de Cigorondo (Cádiz, 1560 - Nueva España, 1611), la Comedia a la gloriosa Magdalena destaca como una de las más depuradas. La trama se apoya en los evangelios, pero sobre todo en pasajes apócrifos de la vida de María Magdalena, en especial aquellos sobre su retiro al desierto para hacer penitencia.
Cigorondo recrea en su Comedia el espacio solitario del desierto al que llega Magdalena. El Amor Divino toma a su cargo la protección de la penitente, pues el Amor Profano y sus secuaces volverán por ella. El Amor Profano se disfrazará de vendedor ambulante y, luego de varios encuentros infortunados con los aliados del Amor Divino, se enfrentará en un combate con su oponente para definir quién se quedará con Magdalena.
La Comedia se presenta ahora en una edición crítica que ofrece a los lectores actuales un texto ejemplar del teatro de colegio novohispano del último cuarto del siglo XVI
