Apoyada en sus estudios de la producción literaria y cultural de la frontera a ambos lados de la línea, Graciela Silva Rodríguez tomó conciencia de que las escritoras chicanas han recibido una vasta atención crítica en Estados Unidos, en ciertas partes del mundo hispánico y en varios países europeos, mientras que ha sido mínima la dedicada a las escritoras mexicanas norteñas. Por eso, la autora ha optado por dedicar su obra mayor a un enfocado y serio estudio de tres narradoras mexicanas fronterizas: Estela Alicia López Lomas, Rosina Conde y Cristina Rivera Garza. Sostiene Silva Rodríguez que la producción literaria y cultural de estas tres escritoras delimita la evolución y las propuestas femeninas de la zona fronteriza norte; ofrece un históricamente detallado contexto social que fue una vez dominado por la escritura masculina y al cual ahora se integra la escritura femenina
