El cancionero popular infantil tiene un carácter literario perfectamente identificable, al ser una modalidad de poesía lírica popular y tradicional que, bien en su origen, bien en su proceso de transmisión, pero siempre en su resultado final, ha sido patrimonio preferente o exclusivo del mundo infantil y juvenil. Este patrimonio, cuyo sustento es la memoria, se está perdiendo rápidamente, y parece ir quedando reducido a las prácticas escolares, desplazándose el centro de interés de la casa y la calle a las aulas y recreos escolares, lugares en los que aún mantiene una cierta vida.
Desde hace más de 35 años, me ha interesado estudiar con argumentos científicos y método filológico las retahílas, canciones, sonsonetes y cantilenas (las composiciones líricas populares que son de tradición específicamente infantil) con el objetivo de defender que son manifestaciones folclóricas, pero también literatura y, dentro de ella, excelentes ejemplos de poesía lírica popular.
Este libro tiene como principal objetivo facilitar a los profesionales de la educación recursos para llevar a las aulas la práctica del cancionero popular infantil, poesía de siempre para lectores del siglo XXI, en la que se unen tradicionalidad, memoria, oralidad y folclore
