Sinopsis
En este libro se ofrece una vista panorámica, y con una visión particular, de la novela mexicana, desde Fernández de Lizardi hasta Federico Gamboa. A todos los autores aquí presentados los une el común denominador de ser novelistas y mostrar algún aspecto del nacionalismo; pero las diferencias que los separan son varias y profundas: abarcan desde la técnica de la escritura, que puede ir de la más desaliñada a la más pulida, hasta el punto de vista que va de lo regional a lo nacional, de lo rural a lo provinciano. Las formas también varían: se hace uso del romanticismo, del costumbrismo; se escriben novelas realistas y otras de pretensión naturalista.
El resultado de la novelística decimonónica nos ha dejado un acervo grandioso de obras en que el nacionalismo variante, según el momento histórico, hace acto de presencia para quedarse como huella innegable de la tarea y los propósitos de los escritores mexicanos. De esta manera, el trabajo que aquí se presenta es un breve recorrido por aquellas novelas que acusan un marcado nacionalismo como autodefinición de México y los mexicanos, desde la Independencia hasta las postrimerías del siglo XIX
