Sinopsis
Este libro pretende rescatar del olvido la voz rebelde del guatemalteco Rafael Crisanto Gil Rodríguez, quien sufrió la persecución, la intolerancia y las injusticias del Santo Oficio de Nueva España (1789-1820). Con discursos irónicos e inteligentes, por momentos ingenuos, y apoyado en una curios erudición, defendió sus puntos de vista y su vida ante la terrible furia dogmática del Tribunal. Sus discursos y argumentos poco a poco nos van revelando la mentalidad y la cultura de su época que en algunos sentidos todavía es la nuestra.
A través de análisis hermenéuticos sobre la Biblia, e inspirado en algunas ideas del portugés Antonio Vieira, entre otros, dedujo que el Antiguo Testamento no estaba superado, era vigente y que judíos y católicos deberían convivir sin odios ni persecuciones. Así, desde su soledad e indefensión, eligió practicar el judaísmo, adoptar posturas proféticas y, apoyado en el libre albedrió, desafió a su sociedad y a la Inquisición en tiempos de risis y grandes cambios en Europa y América. Racionalidad, mitos, creencias, heterodoxia e intolerancias se conjugan en este singular caso de persecución.
