La migración se ha convertido en la gran problemática del mundo de hoy, por eso no es raro que el tema ocupe los primeros lugares en las agendas internacionales. Con los atentados del 11 de septiembre de 2001 en Estados Unidos, surgió una mayor preocupación por la migración y la fragilidad de las fronteras, lo que llevó a establecer nuevas estrategias para controlarlas. Por ejemplo, el desarrollo de tecnologías de identificación personal, como la biometría, ha permitido que países receptores de población organicen bases de datos con la información de miles de migrantes que cruzan las distintas fronteras internacionales, lo que facilita seguirles el rastro o restringir su acceso a los países receptores. Este libro es importante porque no sólo es el primero que analiza la relación entre migración y biometría en la región latinoamericana, sino porque muestra los impactos del uso de estas tecnologías en discursos, prácticas y políticas de control migratorio fronterizo, así como en los marcos normativos desarrollados, los programas biométricos utilizados y sus efectos en materia de protección de datos personales. Dicho así, esta obra busca llenar un vacío explicativo dentro de la bibliografía migratoria actual.
