Algunas de las características que distinguen al ser humano (Homo sapiens, del latín homo, 'hombre' y sapiens, 'sabio') son pensar, amar, reflexionar y crear, mismas que le otorgan poder sobre la manipulación y transformación del ambiente. En la actualidad, nuestra sociedad, caracterizada como consumista, demanda comportamientos conscientes y responsables con el ambiente; para ello, la Educación Ambiental desde la universidad requiere de acciones inmediatas que incluyan a toda la comunidad universitaria, con la intención de crear conciencia ambiental y la posibilidad de replicar estas acciones extramuros.El presente manual es un instrumento que coadyuva al seguimiento puntual del cuidado ambiental universitario y pretende crear una dinámica cotidiana entre las y los universitarios.
