El fracaso del golpe militar y la incapacidad del gobierno legítimo de la República para sofocarlo en su totalidad provocaron el ¿choque de incapacidades¿ que derivó, el 18 de julio de 1936, en guerra fratricida. Sin embargo, en Álava, controlada casi de forma total por los sublevados desde el primer momento, apenas se puede hablar de enfrentamiento bélico y sí de lo que aconteció lejos del frente. Largas penas de prisión, ejecuciones, secuestros, asesinatos, depuraciones profesionales, multas y exilio acabaron de un plumazo con la experiencia democrática iniciada en abril de 1931. En este libro se atienden tanto los tiempos y las formas de represión franquista como la diferenciación entre las víctimas de aquélla. Así, matar fue la consigna franquista en retaguardia hasta finales de 1936. Del exterminio físico se pasó a purgar al ahora enemigo. Casi cuarenta años después, la dictadura murió matando, pero la transición a la democracia no se comprende sin atender a un lento, complejo y laborioso proceso en el que se comenzaron a sanar las heridas abiertas durante tantas e interminables décadas.
