Sinopsis
Buenaventura Vivó (Puebla 1813-Madrid 1872) fue cónsul de México en La Habana de 1846 a 1853 y, durante los años 1853, 1854 y 1855, enviado extraordinario y ministro plenipotenciario de la nación ante la corte de la reina Isabel II de España. Fue diplomático de carrera al servicio de Antonio López de Santa Anna (por más que haya tratado de desmarcarse de dicho personaje como señala Raúl Figueroa Esquer en el prólogo de este libro, al buscar una explicación para la redacción e impresión de estas Memorias).
Sin embargo, estas Memorias son interesantes por las coyunturas históricas que presenta: la situación política de la España de esos años; los juegos y rejuegos entre las potencias europeas y los Estados Unidos en relación con la situación de Cuba como una de las últimas posesiones del declinante Imperio español y sus posibles futuros; las reclamaciones del gobierno español, ante el de México, por el pago de créditos a sus súbditos afincados en nuestro país; la venta y tráfico de indígenas mayas como esclavos en Cuba. Completan estas Memorias descripciones sobre la corte española, sobre su panorama artístico cultural y los cuerpos diplomáticos de las distintas naciones
