Sinopsis
Durante la década de los años ochenta, México se vio afectado de distintas maneras por el escalamiento del conflicto centroamericano. En la frontera sur, los combates se acercaron de manera peligrosa a territorio nacional. Por varios años perduró el temor de que estallara una guerra generalizada en el istmo que incluso involucrara contingentes militares de Estados Unidos y Cuba. Miles de salvadoreños y guatemaltecos llegaron a nuestro país en busca de refugio. En este contexto, el gobierno mexicano jugó un papel activo en función de propiciar soluciones políticas a la confrontación, aunque sin declinar su respaldo a las fuerzas progresistas del área, cuya participación en dicho esfuerzo consideraba indispensable para poder alcanzar acuerdos de paz efectivos y duraderos. A la vez, amplios sectores de la sociedad mexicana respaldaron de manera entusiasta los procesos revolucionarios de Nicaragua, El Salvador y Guatemala. En este sentido, México no fue un actor neutral. Su involucramiento en el conflicto centroamericano tuvo alcances que sólo se equiparan al apoyo prestado a la República Española durante la Guerra Civil de 1936-1939.
