En este libro se aborda el tema de la modernidad y la cultura, particularmente en México. La cultura democrática de los actores sociales (empresarios, trabajadores asalariados, burócratas e intelectuales), así como sus actitudes y posiciones ante el sistema político, implica un problema central de la ciencia política, ya que es necesario conocer el contenido, el sentido y el comportamiento de la sociedad civil. Al analizar la cultura política, que se articula con la democracia, encontramos que ha sido constante y perversamente violada por el sistema político mexicano, en un contexto social de violencia estructural (expresada en pobreza extrema y represión política, cultural y mediática), armada (llevada a cabo por fuerzas del crimen organizado y del terror de Estado) y contra la naturaleza, provocando el pánico y la psicosis que corroen las entrañas del tejido social.
