Los ensayos sobre el yo y la autoconciencia humana que configuran este libro constituyen reflexiones e inferencias neurofilosóficas porque plantean ideas, nociones y aproximaciones sobre el yo y la autoconciencia sustentadas en las ciencias del cerebro, de la cognición y del comportamiento.
El libro define los rasgos, aspectos y expresiones de diez facetas o funciones particulares y peculiares de la autoconciencia que pueden operar por separado, coordinarse parcialmente o trabajar como un todo interactivo e integrado. Ordenadas de las más fundamentales hasta las más complejas, las funciones son las siguientes: (1) sensibilidad, (2) corporalidad, (3) situación, (4) agencia, (5) introspección, (6) autorreferencia, (7) evocación, (8) otredad, (9) identidad y (10) moralidad. Cada una de estas funciones se define, describe y analiza tanto por sus propiedades cognitivas, afectivas, volitivas y conductuales, como en referencia a sus bases cerebrales y funcionales más estudiadas y conocidas, asumiendo que unas y otras -las propiedades mentales y corporales- forman parte de un mismo procedso multifacético, estratificado, entrelazado y dinámico. En el epílogo del libro se esboza una síntesis de este decálogo funcional con fundamento en la persona humana, referente indudable de la autoconciencia.
Esta teoría naturalista, incluyente y extendida enlaza las funciones mentales, corporales y culturales evadiendo una fluctuación entre los elementos "internos" y "externos" del individuo, y evitando también una distinción tajante entre los ámbitos "subjetivo" y "objetivo" en favor de un proceso pautado de relación yo-mundo integrado por un cerebro maleable y partícipe que opera entre el organismo y su nicho físico, biológico y cultural.
