Los ensayos que conforman este libro documentan la impor-tancia de la comunidad mexicana y méxico-americana en la transformación de Los Ángeles, de un pueblo a una ciudad cosmopolita. Porciúncula: Geografías culturales del pueblo de nuestra Señora de los Ángeles es una publicación pionera al ser el primer libro escrito en español (y mayormente desde Estados Unidos) que, desde diferentes disciplinas, reflexiona sobre la vitalidad e importancia cultural del “México de Afuera”. Si bien la concepción de este proyecto editorial antecede a las elecciones estadounidenses de 2016, es indudable que esta nueva realidad política hace aún más urgente la necesidad de documentar la mexicanidad en Los Ángeles.
En efecto, el libro recupera y revalora las contribuciones críticasmexicanas y méxico-americanas que delinean la geografíacultural de Los Ángeles como un espacio vital para definir un imaginario asociado con el México de Afuera. Desde diferentesdisciplinas como la literatura, música, cine y arte, los artículos reconstruyen una geografía cultural sincrónica y diacrónicamentepara evaluar cómo estas producciones culturales mexicanas y chicanas en Los Ángeles afirman y resisten las prácticas socio-culturales de una ciudad de nacimiento hispano, pero que rápidamente pasa a ser una metrópoli admirada, y en muchos casos, resentida por los cimientos culturales mexicanos ychicanos que establecen un pilar socio-cultural en la narrativa dominante sobre Los Ángeles.
