Colombia tiene la reputación de ser uno de los países con menor participación electoral en América Latina, lo que en varias oportunidades de la historia reciente del país ha suscitado debates sobre volver obligatorio el voto. En general, ello se fundamenta en una valoración positiva de la participación
ciudadana y su importancia para la democracia; sin embargo,
pocas veces esto se ha apoyado en un diagnóstico riguroso del problema de la abstención. Este libro tiene el objetivo de contribuir a este balance, estudiando la participación electoral desde varias perspectivas: histórica, geográfica, sociológica y en clave comparativa con los demás países de América Latina. De este modo, muestra que la tendencia a la abstención no se puede generalizar al conjunto del país. Por lo demás, busca contribuir
al debate sobre el voto obligatorio, al delimitar, con base en los
resultados electorales, los grupos que son menos susceptibles de hacerse escuchar a través de las urnas y qué tipo de problemas plantean estas disparidades para la democracia en Colombia.
