El desarrollo de la democracia en América Latina sigue siendo endeble, y pareciera en ocasiones que sufre estancamientos o francos retrocesos. Esto ha generado desilusión y desánimo, principalmente en los grupos y sectores sociales que más padecen la discriminación en todas sus formas, la represión del Estado, el no respeto a los derechos humanos, la parcialidad con que se actúa en los sistemas de justicia, y la implementación de las políticas neoliberales que aumentan la pobreza y la desigualdad social. La variedad de temáticas abordadas en este libro tiene como eje el tema de la democracia y su complicado proceso de construcción en los diversos contextos de los países latinoamericanos. Se incluyen aquí trabajos sobre ciudadanía y democracia, populismo, la modernidad en Latinoamérica, resistencias indígenas y negras, movimientos de mujeres, la disidencia sexual, el cuerpo y la democracia, así como sobre el controvertido y actual proceso venezolano.
