Sinopsis
En el Libro I de la Política, Aristóteles expone su controvertida teoría de la esclavitud natural. Según ésta, hay hombres que nacen para servir los bárbaros y salvajes y otros para mandar las gentes civilizadas y cultas. Añade que si los primeros se resisten al gobierno de los más prudentes, se les puede hacer guerra justa. Nunca se pudo imaginar Aristóteles que estos planteamientos desempeñarían un papel principal en las justificaciones de la Conquista de América. El más conocido representante de esta posición fue el cronista de Carlos V y preceptor de Felipe II, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda. No solamente fue un destacado traductor y comentador de Aristóteles, sino que desarrolló y aplicó sus ideas sobre la esclavitud natural al caso del Nuevo Mundo. El Grupo de Traducción de Latín de la Universidad de los Andes presenta en este libro una traducción anotada de los comentarios de Sepúlveda al Libro I y al capítulo VII del Libro VII de la Política, acompañada de estudios complementarios sobre su pensamiento y su obra.
