<p>Cuando en el siglo pasado las revoluciones armadas se creyeron posibles, también se creyó posible la alianza entre marxistas y cristianos para cambiar la sociedad, de por medio el Concilio Vaticano II y el Congreso Eucarístico de Medellín, que proclamó la opción preferencial por los pobres. El laboratorio de esta amalgama fue la revolución sandinista en Nicaragua, que triunfó en 1979. En este libro Ángel Esteban nos habla de Gustavo Gutiérrez, el ideólogo más visible de esta nueva teología; de monseñor Pedro Casaldáliga y de monseñor Sergio Méndez Arceo, apóstoles del compromiso social; de Ernesto Cardenal, poeta y sacerdote quien, junto con su hermano Fernando, sacerdote también, encabezó el movimiento en Nicaragua, a costa de la suspensión de su ministerio ordenada por el papa Juan Pablo II; del matrimonio formado por Cintio Vitier y Fina García Marruz, poetas los dos y cristianos comprometidos; y de Rubem Alves y Julia Esquivel. Vale la pena, después de pasado medio siglo, entrar, como lo hace el autor en este estudio profundo y dedicado, a revisar los presupuestos e ideales de este cristianismo de vanguardia que hoy parece disolverse en el tiempo.</p><p>SERGIO RAMÍREZ</p>
