Con esta obra se pretende establecer una línea de cercanía con el tipo de historia profesada por Germán Colmenares en los terrenos de lo social y lo económico, la teoría de la historia y también la historia del derecho. El texto que hoy entregamos se abre a algunos de los temas referidos en su obra completa, como sus preocupaciones por lo que llamamos etnohistoria, la historia regional, la relación hacienda-minería, los procesos sociales y la esclavitud, todo ello estudiado en los ámbitos rurales y urbanos en los que Colmenares incursionó. Este no es, pues, en estricto sentido, un texto sobre la obra o la persona de Germán Colmenares, sino una expresión de lo que los historiadores hemos aprendido —o discutido, o confrontado, o decimos saber— de sus propuestas teóricas, ideas, técnicas, metodologías y conocimientos en Historia.
